Back
Pain.

Back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide — yet the vast majority of cases respond well to evidence-based physiotherapy. Our Surrey clinic specializes in finding and treating the root cause, not just the symptoms.

Causes & Conditions

Why your back
hurts.

Back pain encompasses a spectrum of conditions from acute muscle strain to chronic disc disease. Understanding the underlying cause is essential — identical symptoms can stem from very different pathologies, each requiring a different treatment approach.

At Move to Motion, every back pain assessment begins with a comprehensive movement screen, neurological testing, and detailed history to identify whether your pain originates from disc, joint, muscle, nerve, or a combination of structures.

  • Lumbar disc herniation — nucleus pulposus pressing on spinal nerves causing sciatica
  • Degenerative disc disease — progressive disc dehydration and height loss with age
  • Facet joint arthropathy — arthritic degeneration of the small joints of the spine
  • Lumbar spinal stenosis — narrowing of the spinal canal causing leg pain and weakness
  • Sacroiliac joint dysfunction — pain at the junction of spine and pelvis
  • Muscle and ligament strain — acute injury from lifting, twisting, or sudden movement
  • Spondylolisthesis — vertebral slippage causing instability and nerve compression
  • Piriformis syndrome — deep gluteal muscle compressing the sciatic nerve
  • Postural dysfunction — sustained poor posture driving chronic muscular overload
  • Myofascial pain — trigger points in paraspinal and gluteal muscles
Our Treatment

How we
treat it.

Manual Therapy

Joint mobilization, manipulation, and soft tissue therapy to restore segmental mobility and reduce pain immediately.

IMS / Dry Needling

Precise intramuscular needling to release deep paraspinal trigger points and reduce nerve sensitization driving chronic pain.

Spinal Decompression

Computerized traction reducing intradiscal pressure and retracting herniated disc material — non-surgical relief for disc injuries.

Class IV Laser

Deep tissue photobiomodulation to reduce inflammation, accelerate disc and tissue repair, and relieve pain without medication.

Focused Shockwave

Acoustic pressure waves to break down calcific deposits and stimulate repair in chronically inflamed facet joints and tendons.

Active Rehabilitation

Progressive core strengthening and movement retraining to stabilize the spine and prevent recurrence.

What to Expect

Your path to
recovery.

Your first appointment involves a comprehensive assessment — movement analysis, neurological screening, postural evaluation, and a detailed pain history. Treatment begins in your very first session, typically combining manual therapy with education and a targeted home exercise program.

Most acute back pain resolves significantly within 4–8 sessions. Chronic or disc-related conditions typically require 8–16 sessions with a progressive rehabilitation component. ICBC and WorkSafeBC cover back pain treatment for eligible claims.

  • No doctor’s referral required in BC
  • ICBC direct billing for MVA-related back injuries
  • WorkSafeBC accepted for workplace back injuries
  • Direct billing to all major extended health insurers
  • Same-day or next-day appointments often available
  • Home exercise program provided from session one
