Individually engineered from a 3D scan of your foot — prescription orthotics that correct biomechanical faults and relieve the pain they cause throughout your lower limb and spine.
Custom Foot Orthotics
Custom orthotics are prescription medical devices fabricated from a 3D scan or cast of your foot, designed to correct specific biomechanical faults in the way your foot contacts the ground with each step. Unlike over-the-counter insoles, which offer generalized cushioning or arch support, custom orthotics are individually engineered based on a detailed biomechanical assessment that identifies where your gait deviates from optimal and how those deviations are loading your joints, tendons, and muscles.
At Move to Motion, orthotics are prescribed and assessed by our physiotherapists as part of a comprehensive lower limb evaluation. We use digital gait analysis and pressure mapping alongside clinical assessment to ensure your orthotic prescription addresses the root cause of your symptoms rather than simply masking them. Our orthotics are fabricated in Canada by certified orthotists and are direct-billed to most extended health insurance plans.
The Assessment
A proper orthotic prescription begins with a comprehensive biomechanical assessment, not just a foot scan. Your physiotherapist evaluates your foot posture in standing and walking, assesses joint range of motion at the ankle, subtalar joint, and midfoot, observes your gait pattern from the front and behind, and identifies compensatory patterns at the knee, hip, and lower back that may be driven by your foot mechanics.
From this assessment, a prescription is generated specifying the type of shell material (rigid, semi-rigid, or flexible depending on your activity level and condition), the posting angles at the heel and forefoot, any accommodations for painful areas, and the top cover material appropriate for your footwear. This prescription is then sent to our certified orthotist partner for fabrication, with a typical turnaround of 2–3 weeks.
Do You Need Them?
Not everyone with foot pain needs orthotics, and not everyone who could benefit from orthotics currently has foot pain. Our physiotherapists will give you an honest assessment of whether custom orthotics are likely to help your specific condition, or whether exercise and manual therapy alone will address your symptoms more effectively.
Plantar fasciitis lasting more than 6 weeks, recurring shin splints, knee pain related to pronation or valgus alignment, lower back pain with leg length discrepancy, or diabetic foot care needs.
Acute foot pain with a specific structural cause, conditions primarily driven by weakness or flexibility deficits that respond well to exercise, or mild pronation without symptoms.
Growing feet change rapidly. We assess children’s gait carefully and only prescribe orthotics when biomechanical faults are producing symptoms or are at risk of producing structural changes.
