Origin
South Korea
XERF was developed by Lutronic — South Korea's top medical laser and energy-based aesthetics company — in partnership with U.S.-based Cynosure. The technology was first launched and proven in Seoul's world-renowned aesthetic clinics, where procedures are mainstream, scientifically rigorous, and held to some of the highest standards globally.
South Korea is the global benchmark for non-invasive aesthetic innovation. XERF became one of the country's most sought-after skin tightening treatments before expanding into Japan, Hong Kong, Canada, and the United States. Its Korean heritage means it was tested in one of the world's most demanding aesthetic markets — and it passed.
What is XERF
XERF — Extreme Radio Frequency — is the world's first multifrequency monopolar radiofrequency technology for structural skin tightening. Developed by Lutronic, South Korea's leading medical laser company, in partnership with Cynosure, XERF was first pioneered and popularized in Seoul before earning FDA clearance and Health Canada approval for global distribution. It represents a new standard in non-invasive skin tightening and rejuvenation.
Unlike treatments that only reach the surface, XERF penetrates deep into the skin's dermal and subdermal layers to stimulate collagen production at the source. The result is a gradual, natural-looking lift and tightening — the kind that looks like you took exceptional care of your skin, not like you had a procedure done.
It requires no needles, no numbing cream, and no recovery time. You can walk in, receive treatment, and continue your day — which is why it's become a preferred option for patients who want real, lasting aesthetic results without the risks or downtime of surgery.

The Science
XERF delivers controlled radiofrequency energy into targeted skin layers, triggering the body's own regenerative response. The process is precise, safe, and built around your skin's natural biology.
The XERF handpiece emits multifrequency monopolar radiofrequency energy that penetrates the skin at multiple controlled depths simultaneously — reaching both the dermis and the subdermal layer without disrupting the surface.
The RF energy generates precise, controlled heat within the targeted tissue. This thermal effect triggers the body's wound-healing response — breaking down old, lax collagen fibres while stimulating fibroblast activity to produce new collagen and elastin.
Over the weeks following treatment, the body continues rebuilding its collagen matrix. Skin gradually becomes firmer, tighter, and more lifted — with results that continue improving over one to three months and can last years with proper maintenance.
Why XERF
XERF was designed from the ground up around patient comfort and clinical efficacy — delivering measurable skin tightening results through a treatment experience that respects your time and your skin.
No recovery period required. Treatments typically take 30–60 minutes and you can return to all normal activities immediately. No redness, no swelling, no disruption to your day.
XERF is entirely non-invasive. No injections, no topical anaesthetic, no incisions. The treatment is comfortable enough for most patients to tolerate with no preparation at all.
As the world's first multifrequency monopolar RF device, XERF targets tissue at multiple depths simultaneously — giving it a clinical advantage over single-frequency RF devices that can only reach one layer at a time.
Because XERF works with your body's own regenerative biology, results build gradually and look entirely natural. No frozen expressions, no pulled appearance — just healthier, firmer skin.
The collagen remodelling process continues for months after treatment. Most patients see continued improvement for up to three months post-session, with results that can be sustained through periodic maintenance treatments.
XERF by Cynosure is FDA-cleared and Health Canada approved — backed by rigorous clinical data demonstrating measurable improvement in skin laxity, texture, and firmness across diverse patient populations.
How It Compares

XERF vs. Microneedling
Microneedling
Microneedling works by creating hundreds of controlled micro-injuries to the skin using fine needles. These punctures trigger a wound-healing response that stimulates collagen production — but the process is inherently surface-level, primarily affecting the epidermis and upper dermis.
Because it involves needles penetrating the skin, microneedling requires topical numbing cream, carries a risk of infection if not performed properly, and typically results in redness and sensitivity for 24–72 hours post-treatment. It is also not recommended for patients with active acne, rosacea, or certain skin sensitivities.
XERF by Cynosure
XERF achieves collagen stimulation without any skin penetration. Its radiofrequency energy passes through the skin to heat deeper tissue directly — reaching the subdermal layers that microneedling simply cannot access. This deeper stimulation produces a more pronounced lifting and tightening effect, particularly in areas of skin laxity.
There is no recovery time, no risk of post-procedure infection, and no restriction on patient skin type or condition. Patients who cannot receive microneedling due to active breakouts or skin sensitivities are often excellent candidates for XERF.
XERF vs. Laser Therapy
Laser Therapy
Laser skin resurfacing uses focused light energy to remove the outer layers of skin, targeting pigmentation, texture irregularities, and fine lines. Ablative lasers are highly effective for surface-level concerns but involve significant recovery time — often a week or more of redness, peeling, and sensitivity.
Laser energy is absorbed by melanin, which means darker skin tones carry a higher risk of hyperpigmentation or burns. Non-ablative lasers reduce this risk but are also less effective for significant skin laxity or deep structural tightening — the area where XERF excels.
XERF by Cynosure
Radiofrequency energy, unlike laser, is not absorbed by melanin — meaning XERF is safe and effective for all skin tones and types with equal efficacy. This is a clinically significant advantage for patients who have historically been excluded from laser-based aesthetic treatments.
Where laser excels at surface texture and tone, XERF excels at structural tightening and volumetric lifting. For patients whose primary concern is skin laxity — sagging jowls, loose neck skin, softening facial contours — XERF delivers results that laser therapy fundamentally cannot.
Who It's For
XERF is suited to a wide range of patients and skin concerns. If you're experiencing any of the following, XERF may be the right treatment for you.
Loss of skin firmness in the face, neck, and jawline — the natural result of collagen reduction with age. XERF specifically targets the structural layer responsible, rebuilding from the inside out.
As the face loses volume and collagen, the jawline softens and jowls begin to form. XERF's deep RF energy tightens the subdermal tissue to restore a cleaner, more defined contour.
The neck and chest are among the first areas to show the visible effects of ageing. XERF's non-invasive approach makes it an ideal solution for patients who want improvement in these areas without surgery.
Patients in their 30s and 40s who want to maintain and preserve their skin's structural integrity before significant laxity sets in. RF energy stimulates collagen before it's lost, not just after.
Patients who have experienced weight loss and are dealing with mild to moderate skin looseness can benefit from XERF's ability to tighten and tone skin that has lost its structural support.
Because XERF uses radiofrequency rather than light or laser energy, it is safe and equally effective across all Fitzpatrick skin types — with no risk of the hyperpigmentation that can affect laser treatments on darker skin tones.

Common Questions
Most patients achieve their desired results with a series of 3–6 treatments, spaced 2–4 weeks apart. The number varies based on the treatment area, the degree of skin laxity, and individual patient response. Your clinician at Move to Motion will recommend a personalized treatment plan during your consultation.
Some patients notice initial improvements within a few weeks of their first treatment. However, because XERF works through collagen remodelling — a biological process — the most significant results continue to develop over 1–3 months. Results are gradual, natural-looking, and continue to improve with each session in a treatment series.
Most patients describe the sensation as a warm, deep heat — comfortable and well-tolerated. No numbing cream is required. The handpiece is designed to deliver controlled energy with consistent comfort throughout the treatment. Some patients may feel mild warmth or tingling in the treated area for a short period afterward, which resolves quickly.
XERF has an excellent safety profile. The most common experience following treatment is mild temporary redness or warmth in the treated area, which typically resolves within a few hours. There is no bruising, no swelling, no peeling, and no risk of the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation associated with some laser treatments.
The collagen produced through XERF treatments is your body's own collagen — which means results are durable and long-lasting. Many patients enjoy their results for 1–2 years or more. Periodic maintenance treatments can extend and enhance results over time. Maintaining a good skincare routine, sun protection, and healthy lifestyle habits all support the longevity of your outcomes.
XERF is not recommended for patients who are pregnant, have implanted electrical devices (such as pacemakers or defibrillators), have active skin infections or open wounds in the treatment area, or have metal implants in the targeted region. A thorough consultation with our clinical team will confirm your candidacy and ensure XERF is the right choice for you.
